ADDO NATIONAL PARK

Port Elizabeth needs to extend or relocate its airport because the runway is too short for larger planes. The city intends to also relocate its port, and develop the existing port area to become a complex of shops, restaurants and bars somewhat like Docklands in Melbourne.
Private Game Parks are preferable to Public Game Parks if time is restricted because they are smaller.
Last evening we ate crocodile, warthog, and kudu.  All game animals which are consumed by humans are farmed for meat.
We had a full day excursion to the Addo Park with our own guide.  The scenery was very beautiful - mostly bush land with some cleared open spaces.  The range of animals and birds which we saw was amazing - you just need to keep your eyes peeled and camera and binoculars ready.
Warthog need to kneel with their front legs to eat grass - this is a humorous sight.
Elephants are amazing animals.  They have no sweat glands, need to eat for about 20 hrs per day, and obtain much of their water needs from fleshy plants such as those in the aloe Vera family.  The gestation period is 22 months, with the babies being delivered in the heat of the day when predators are sleeping and the sun bakes the afterbirth so no odour attracts big cats.  Mud on their hides prevents sunburn, and when it falls off it takes ticks and other insects with it.  Elephants make wonderful mothers, and the whole herd act together to protect the babies.
Addo Park has a very upmarket visitors centre with top end facilities and an excellent restaurant.
On the way home we dropped in at the cricket stadium where Australia recently defeated South Africa.
The guide was fairly quite on this issue!
