GAME DRIVES - CHOBE NATIONAL PARK ( No.2 )

The game drive vehicles are relatively comfortable considering the state of the tracks through the park. We were lucky enough to spot 5 lion cubs walking through the bush (mother had given birth to 6 but one had vanished earlier (possibly dinner for hyenas).  A little later we saw a mother lion with 3 cubs resting in the tall grass very close to the track.  Vultures were perched in the branches of tall trees waiting for the lions to finish with the kudu kill from the day before.
There were many more "old men" buffalo moving together through the grassland, no doubt soon to become a feast for a lion pride.  We saw many solitary male impala "losers" - those who had fought other males for exclusive rights to a herd of females and been beaten by a stronger and luckier male.
A group of 7 giraffe were leisurely feeding on a tree in easy sight from the track (acacia is their favourite tree but there are not many of these) - they are the most elegant and graceful animals to watch.  Giraffe cannot lie down for any length of time, because it then becomes difficult for them to stand up and they could become the victims of big cat predators.
The game lodge is surrounded by electric fencing which is turned on at night.  This lodge is the only permanent accommodation in Chobe National Park, which is very large (about 50% of the size of Kruger National Park).
